Why is this book called The Grace of the Witch? Does Circe the witch show Odysseus and his men mercy?

What is in store for Odysseus and his men in this book? And who exactly is the goddess Circe?

Averee said...

Odysseus didn't go with the group to scope out Circe's island, unlike on the Cyclopes' island. Why is this?

Why does Circe turn men to animals and then just leave them there? What purpose does that serve?

Averee said...

Circe turned the men into pigs, is she plannning to eat them?

If Circe is a goddess, why is she being called a witch, and why does she perform these spells?

The god Hermes gave Odysseus a plant to protect him against Circe's magic and tell him to make Circe swear not to play any witches tricks. Odysseus doesn't really ever listen to advice, so is he going to listen to Hermes?

Why would Odysseus betray his wife and go with her?

Why are the gods being nice? Aren't they usually mean?

seand said...

Why would Odysseus enter Circe's bed if he had a wife that he loved at home?

alexe said...

What was the point in changing the men into pigs?

kellyS said...

What was the point of them even stopping at this island in the first place? Like Annie said. Why don't they just keep sailing home because obviously these little pit-stops aren't going so good.

Is Hermes like some scorned lover of Circe. Does he help Odysseus to get back at her then tell Circe Odysseus is coming so he can get back on Circe's good side? Is there more to Hermes' character?

Anna K said...

Why did she turn them into pigs? What would she of done with them? Does she have more people on the island that she turned into pigs?

Averee said...

What is Circe planning for the rest of Odyssseus' crew? She promised no witch's tricks, but will she keep her promise?

alenav said...

Why would they go back??

kellyS said...

Were the lions and wolves in the beginning actually men, and that's why they were so tame. Or did she just make them tame but they were already those animals.

Averee said...

Is Odysseus perhaps becoming less and less of a good leader? He has certainly lost the loyalty of some of his men.

Anna K said...

What did the rest of his crew do who didn't come with them onto the island?

alenav said...

How do they not realize that they have been there for years?
